Cultural Showcase - Communities at Work Satellite event

The Communities at Work Community Development team will be running activities at the Gungahlin Community Centre as part of Celebrate Gungahlin 2022.

Come along and participate in a drumming workshop, a composting workshop or just sit and have a cuppa and a chat with the Community Development team about what you love about your local community.

·         Drumming Workshop

Communities at Work are excited to showcase our drumming workshops which will be led by Charles Koker, a professional African Drummer in the ACT and runs interactive Drumming workshops for all ages. Charles runs the African Show Case for the National Multicultural Festival and is a leading drummer with the Zambezi River Drummers.

Some of the health, wellbeing, and social outcomes from participating in drumming include:

·         Encourages listening skills and interaction

·         Team-work skills including confidence and trust

·         Promotes multicultural awareness

·         Stimulates physical and neurological coordination

·         Nurtures improvisation, concentration & creativity

·         Powerful healing and stress relief

·         Sense of belonging and community

·         Immediate sense of achievement

·         Mindfulness and relaxation

There will be two separate drumming workshops, commencing at 11.30am and 12.05pm. Each workshop will run for approximately 25 minutes in duration.

·         Infusion

Infusion is a mobile morning tea initiative by Communities at Work that has a focus on “Conversations that Count.” Infusion provides a safe, welcoming relaxed environment where community members can come together to connect, and chat with others in their community over a ‘cuppa’. Infusion also provides information on a variety of local activities and services and is an opportunity for you to talk to the team about what you love about your community.

·         Composting Workshop

Members from Canberra City Farm will present a workshop on composting garden and kitchen waste and will provide information on what to compost, understanding how to compost, ways to compost, and how to keep your compost healthy and productive.

Commencing at 1.30pm, the workshop will run for about an hour and there will be opportunities to ask questions.
