Make your Own Raffia Basket
Make a small raffia basket in this beginners workshop with Sally Holliday – artist and maker.
Sally’s exhibition Way Finding is on display at Common Ground. Way Finding is a series of weavings made in reflective reverie, whilst recalling time spent in the Mulanggari Grasslands Nature Reserve over the past 12 months. Each weaving pays tribute to a particular aspect of the grassland, carrying with it its own teachings. Diverse in form, these works invite you to look closely and appreciate the details for embedded in each piece there is a lesson, a quiet teaching.
In this 3 hour workshop you will learn the basics of basket weaving using raffia (a natural fibre) including some introductory stitches, coiling technique, how to shape and finish your basket. Your starter kit includes – tapestry needle, plain raffia, coloured raffia. Light morning tea included.
